Coheed Obession: Full Accounting

In order to occupy my mind until I find out more details about this Neverender thing, I will at long-last provide a full accounting of my successes and failures as a Coheed and Cambria fanatic. I first heard Coheed on a now-defunct Live365.com radio station in probably May 2002 (I started a new position at my company and shared an office with a fellow music fanatic and we traded off turns picking stations on Live365). Thanks to the Cobalt & Calcium site for some of the dates.

October 9, 2002 - Coheed w/Thrice & Hot Water Music at the 9:30 Club - epic FAIL - there's no good explanation for not going to this show, although this was the same week as the first DC sniper attacks and I was also taking a class at USDA grad school at the time. Another ticket stub I found confirms that I had been at the 9:30 Club about two weeks prior, so I should have known about this show.

February 25, 2003 - Coheed at the Ottobar - FAIL - I tried, I really tried this time. I didn't own a car at the time and had never been to Baltimore and it snowed that night. I did however rent a car (super-crappy gold Chevy Metro) and drive to Baltimore only to find the show was sold-out. I am still depressed about missing this one, though I do have the bootleg recording of the show.

#1 July 30, 2003 - Coheed on the Warped Tour at Nissan Pavilion - I also had a rental car for this one and I had to leave immediately following Coheed to fly to Arizona to meet a group of Kazakh scientists. Coheed played on one of those small side stages yet probably gathered about 5x the crowd of the band who had just played on the neighboring larger stage. I was crushed in a crowd of 14 year olds and these little girls in front of me were very excited to take a photo of Claudio's butt. I was too old for the Warped Tour then and now. I was also too embarrassed to talk to them when they were sitting around in their merch tent.

#2 September 21 2003 - I finally watch Coheed at the Ottobar (confirmed by this JHU article; no thanks to Cobalt & Calcium - this one is not listed on the Gigography). I was half-done with this post and realized that I'd missed one. This was the first time I saw them play The Trooper (with Pete singing from the sound booth) and I think I was one of only a handful of people in the club who knew the song. Damn emo kids! I told Travis I was going to see them in Las Vegas and he looked at me like I was crazy. True story.

#3 October 17, 2003 - Coheed plays an acoustic opening opening set (w/o Travis, who was at his brother's wedding that weekend) w/Thursday and Thrice in horrible Pittston, PA at The Staircase, which is really like a polka/wedding reception hall. The will-call line was literally a half-mile long because I had to drive my rental car next to it to park along the side of the road and then walk back, in the rain, to stand next to this group of assholes from Westchester, NY who ruined my evening and are the cause of my continuing bad connotations with the song Blood Red Summer. Also, I was only indoors for possibly two songs but I guess that still counts, even though I couldn't actually "see" anyone on the stage. This was the first time I met Pete and Kwame.

#4 Saturday, November 1, 2003 - Coheed once again opens for Thursday and Thrice at the Las Vegas House of Blues. Oh yeah I di-id. I was trying to go to the Halloween show in Los Angeles so I could combine my blossoming obsession with Coheed with visiting college friends I hadn't seen in 5 years, but it was not to be. I stupidly booked the Jet Blue flight to Long Beach and then tried to buy a ticket for the show, which was, you guessed it - SOLD OUT. So I bought a ticket to this show, booked an extra leg on Jet Blue from Long Beach to Vegas and to nurse my sorrow about missing Halloween with my best college buddy, booked a room at the Mandalay Bay. This could probably explain some of my debt. Oh and I failed at hanging out with Coheed because while both of the headlining bands actually stayed at the Mandalay Bay, Coheed was out driving around somewhere and I fell asleep before Kwame never called me back. In spite of those assholes who threw ice at me and paid zero attention to the show itself, this was a great set. One of the few times I've seen them play Neverender and all three Velorium Campers.

#5 Saturday, November 15, 2003 - Coheed still opening for Thursday and Thrice. Rental car to Norfolk - almost 100% sure it was raining because it rained just about every time I drove there. This was probably where Coheed and crew started to suspect that I have a problem...

#6 November 20, 2003 - Coheed opening for Thursday/Thrice at the 9:30 Club. I dragged two of my friends to this show to try and share my joy/obession. They did not enjoy it. As I recall, Claudio was pretty sick and sounded terrible.

For these we can refer to various posts on the blog. 2004 was the year I resolved to see as many shows as possible (trying for 52 - one per week). I didn't quite make it that year but I did continue to see Coheed on my two "Coheed Week" vacations. This was also the year I created my Coheed hoodie.
#7 - #12 of Coheed: Coheed Week the first: April 12 - 17 2004 (see #9 - 14)- I drove a rented silver Mitsubishi Gallant from DC to Norfolk back to DC to Philly to fucking Worcester, MA to Asbury Park, NJ. It only took me four more years to finally buy a GPS. One of the greatest nights of my life was the first night in Asbury Park hanging out with Mic from Coheed and Matt Pinfield(!) who was/is(?) their Columbia Records A&R rep. The second day of the Skate & Surf fest was the first time I got to see Bear vs. Shark and also the only time I saw the "Brothers of Decadence."

#13 - #15 of Coheed: October 9 -11 2004 (see #31-#33) - this was the first time I took my Scion Ara to a Coheed show. [Edited to add that this was the second time I saw 3 - I saw them first opening for Coheed at the Ottobar.] The Canal Club show was not that great (3 was amazing; Coheed was somewhat off). I think the show had been moved to the upstairs of the club due to hurricane-related flooding in Shockoe Bottom. The two 9:30 Club shows were some of the best I've seen to-date. The second night at 9:30 was the first time I heard Hearshot Kid Disaster live - that was the song that began all this madness. I think this was the first time I met Chuck (tour manager extraordinaire) and hung out with Josh.

#16 October 17 2004 (#34)- Electric Factory in Philly. I had a seat right over the stage so I had an amazing view. 3 was awesome at this show too.

#17 & #18 of Coheed: November 20 - 21 2004 (#40-#41). I drove down to Charlotte NC to the Tremont Music Hall, which I would never recommend to anyone. This was probably the first time I actually hung out with 3. The drive from Charlotte to Norfolk was a really nice fall drive - cotton being harvested, boiled peanut stands, etc. I miss Cooch!

#19 June 11 2005 Coheed at Music Midtown in Atlanta Ms. dW and I flew down to the ATL for this one. I was in massive Coheed withdrawl before this show but this held me over until their fall tour that year. I got very badly sunburned while waiting to get the ticket autographed (pictured).

#20 August 6 2005 Coheed in Central Park This is just complete madness, I know. This was the show where I took this super awesome photo of Claudio and my friend Bryan who met me there was so freaked out by the crowdswell for Coheed that he left and didn't come back.

#21 - #24 Coheed Week 2005 I had to have my windshield replaced after this trip, though not because this was when I met Gentleman Jim. I think this was also probably the trip where I developed a huge crush on Chuck.

#25 Coheed in Baltimore - Don't drink and drive, kids.

#26 Coheed at 9:30 again - not even going to re-discuss this one.

#27 & #28 Coheed in Germany - February 2006 - I didn't count the Hamburg show because I only got there for the last couple songs and I never made it inside the club until it was over because I don't speak German.

#30 May 14 2006 - I remember not being able to wait to get in that 30th show.

#31 May 20 2006 - I can't believe that was more than 2 years ago. What the hell did I even do in 2007? I miss Gabe and Angry Dave and MP.

#32 & #33 August 3 -4 2006 - Yeah, I've even seen Coheed without half of the band there.

#34 October 25 2007 - still can't believe I made it to this show on time - love ya, Tim from Amtrak!

#35 November 25 2007 - whoa, 9:30 Club again. This tour manager can't hold a candle to Chuck.

#36 February 12 2008 - cold, so very cold. Loved Omaha in spite of the asshole who threw a beer in Claudio's face.

#37 May 30 2008 - clearly I have wasted the last two years by not viewing Coheed enough times
