Turbonegro
Black Cat

The first show of my 30th year (15th year of show-going). It was good - not as long or as many costumes as previous Turbonegro shows, but we had a good time. I'm still confused by the big drunk fratties who were yelling out 'you're not in Europe!' when Hank was saying something between songs. Whatevs.

Review: Turbonegro 10/10

Photos!!!

First time I've been back to Philly for a show since July. Had dinner out (Burmese) with cousin R and family. Baby is getting big (8 mos) - he was standing up on his own when I walked in the door. Last time he was just starting to push himself up with his arms and could only roll over on one side.

Got to TLA some time before Turbonegro came on so I picked up my ticket and went back to the car to put on my 'Happy Tom' make-up (blue eyeshadow and sparklies and pink lipstick). I can't figure out how many people TLA holds but it was definitely not a sold-out show (neither was Baltimore...weird).
Anyway, there were some Turbojugend there from Oslo and from Berlin. Ah, crossing an ocean to see a band: the final frontier. I would actually love to see Turbonegro in either Norway or Germany. Those shows must be insane - huge outdoor crowds full of crazy super fans. Not like a Philly with a bunch of confused/amused hipsters standing around the fringes. Not that there weren't a good number of uniform-wearing/card-carrying Turbojugend there (even saw a Baltimore city jacket) but there were quite a few people there who were just gawkers. [I can't really criticize too much though because I've gone to see several bands based on name alone: Billy Club Sandwich, Assrockers, etc.]
Same set list as Friday. I could see a lot better because TLA has a balcony and the main floor is sloped. I was still sweating like crazy though - I think it's my fancy new jacket - that thing is hot. This time I managed to snag a big stack of zillion dollar bills - now I've got Hank and Pol Pot Pamparius. I guess Euroboy and Rune Rebellion either don't have their faces on currency or they spit out the other side or something (I didn't even see any though).
This time I got some video of the Norwegian lesson, so ask me if you want to see it (file is 200MB).
Not much else to report. I almost got hit by a semi on the way home but fortunately there was nothing next to me so I was able to swerve (All I saw was a big green truck fender in the passenger's window getting closer and closer).
Since Turbonegro probably won't be back for a while (or if you missed it), check out Happy Tom's death-punk side project: SCUM

I'm the zillion dollar sadist: Review: Turbonegro 10/7

Turbonegro
Sonar
Baltimore MD

It's raining men! would have been a fitting cover for Turbonegro given the torrential downpours we've had over the past couple days. Driving to Baltimore was horrendous: fog, heavy rain, roadspray. Then, parking...oy. There's a metered lot across from Sonar, but I didn't get there early enough to take advantage of it.

As it was I arrived just before Turbonegro took the stage at 10:30. They're using the intro from the new album Party Animals and blasted right into 'All My Friends Are Dead' Hank does a lot of talking between songs but they played for almost two hours, covering 3/4 of the new album and many of the old favorites. Set list included at least: Blow Me (like the wind), City of Satan, Wasted Again, High on the Crime, Final Warning, Sell Your Body (to the night), F*** the world, Sailor Man, Get It On, Don't Say Motherfucker, Motherfucker, Rendezvous with Anus (my personal favorite), Prince of the Rodeo, Back to Dungaree High, and of course the final encore was I Got Erection. During one of the early songs there was a blast of smoke, confetti and zillion dollar bills rained from the ceiling. I managed to grab a Happy Tom (above) and a Chris Summers Prince of Drummers 2 zillion dollar bill. Some of the hardcore Turbojugend had fistfuls of the cash that they snagged before everyone else realized what it was. I looked around for a Hank, but I didn't find one that wasn't all gross from being on the floor. During the first encore (after they'd all changed clothes and came out to the Apocalypse Dudes intro to play Age of Pamparius) big 'Turbonegro: Party Animals' balloons also fell from the ceiling. At lot of these got popped by some of them were grabbed and taken home by fanatical Turbojugend.
Since there are only 10 shows on this whole US 'tour' there were a lot of people from everywhere there: Boston, Philly, etc. Since somebody decided to go have dinner with their best friend in the whole wide world instead of going to the show with me, I hung around my favorite Ottobar staff. I met some nice guys on the way out who were telling me about the suckass crowd at last week's Pixies show. This crowd didn't get too rowdy, but the Sonar bouncers don't fuck around - they threw several people out. In fact according to their website, the dude I met on Thursday at stupid Jaxx probably would have gotten thrown out of Sonar. Also, one of their bouncers looks like a mohawk/goatee version of Jamie from 3IoB. So, um, yeah, Sonar was a pretty cool place.

Now if you're looking for something else to do, go watch this ridiculous video for 'The Suffering' - tell me that's not the set of an old Savatage video...
