So this was the Strhess Tour. I think I would have preferred a different lineup (HIMSA instead of Poison the Well at least - I was only interested in the opening bands). I'm fairly indifferent to headliners Shadows Fall, though I would have watched them if they hadn't been immediately preceed by Poison the Well, whom I refuse to watch again this year.

My 7th viewing of Still Remains (first time outside of Jaxx or Ottobar). They had yet another new guy - this time a new bass player. The only person who is still in the band from the first time I saw them is Jordan.

Mmmm...Bury Your Dead. Eric is now my cell phone wall paper.

This is the first time I've seen Darkest Hour in our hometown. Represent! I like them and own their albums but tend to forget they exist.

So apparently Bury Your Dead and The Haunted can play 'Bury Your [fucking] Dead' on the same stage and the universe doesn't implode or anything. Oh, and get well soon Eric! If human saliva was good for treating burns....oh, uh, so the show went as follows:

I don't know what a Gizmachi is but it's very loud. I read somewhere that they were discovered by Slipknot. Anyway, they're from Orange County NY, which is apparently not totally devoid of musicianship of various kinds. Musically it's kind of like Into Eternity was eaten and digested by a nu-metal band in an institutional brown shirt. I thought they were pretty OK. Their drummer was awesome and the bass player has a big ol' neck tattoo, so you can't go wrong with that.

I'm still so excited about The Haunted that I forgot Bury Your Dead played second. Anyway, Mr. Neck Tattoos (Eric) is out of commission because he "burned his face off" [my initial reaction to this was *shaking head and sighing* 'boys']. The girl at Ritz Camera will be so disappointed when I print these photos and he's not in there (her reaction last time: 'whoa, that guy has a lot of ink'). Anyway, very short set but still awesome even one man down. BYD always gets the crowd into a mosh - although it was a fairly small crowd due to the fact that Madball was over at the Ottobar (tough choice for me too, although I've seen Madball at least a dozen times though I still have a crush on Freddy from my own NYHC days plus they are/were Tshaka's favorites). The highlights: pink sombreros and switched instruments. The lowlights: none. I love going to the last show of a tour - it's prank night!

I feel like I've been waiting all my life to see The Haunted, even though I was only apprised of them by Death Metal Roze and {insert clever nickname for SH here} sometime last year. Although I seem to recall one Mr. Ian 'MTV' Robinson espousing their wisdom back when I had MTV2 as well. My neck still hurts today from headbanging. They pretty much only did songs from the first album and the latest one and they didn't get to play nearly long enough. I can't wait to see them again with Meshuggah. Oh Mr. Haunted you are perfection. Shadows Fall's singer came out for a song and there was some naked BYD drummer action going on as well, but I don't really know what that was about. I need to learn Swedish. Is it OK to have your own band's name on your pants?

Uh, Shadows Fall. How the hell do I know so many of their songs? Those are some crazy dreds, white boy.

Random stuff:
-obnoxious kids yelling crap before the show started
-I still think the Recher looks like the stage for an elementary school play
-Baltimore has a tattoo museum (how apropos)

This is the 3rd Monday night in a row I've gone to a show...quite a streak. This was an off-date show for Bury Your Dead who are appearing on the second stage of this year's Ozzfest (which I could neither afford nor had time to see).

This Year Passed is a Baltimore metal-core band who looked kinda like 'Atreyu: Baltimore Edition' what with the matching black dress shirts and ties. I don't know if I trust a man wearing more eye make-up than me, but they were pretty good. They rocked hard in spite of the small, listless crowd.

Mmmmm....Bury Your Dead. Another hott Victory Records band - I would say that BYD is more metal than -core, though there is certainly a healthy dose of hardcore therein. Then again I wasn't really that focused on the music. I did get kicked a couple times when I was in the back because I was looking at the camera's LCD and not at the kids throwin down. I got some OK photos, but I'm still having issues with the stupid flash delay (which shouldn't be). They played a pretty long set and I don't think anybody in the place stopped moving the entire time.

And now it's time for this week's edition of 3 Ridiculous Questions with the Bass Player - tonight's player is the ebullient Rich of Bury Your Dead:

MoS: Now that you have a big bus, is there anything crazy on your tour rider? Is there anything unusual you would add?
Rich: We just have regular stuff - fruit, regular and diet soda, we still like PB&J...I guess one thing I might do is to require separated candies - like I might ask for 156 green M&Ms because I'm Irish. And I would count them all too, just to be sure...

MoS: Who picks the promo shots used on the Victory Records site? Some of them are just hideously bad (e.g. Atreyu's photos - not Bury Your Dead's though...)
Rich: We worked with a couple photographers but I guess Victory picked which ones to use.

MoS: What two Ozzfest bands would you like to see in a steel cage match?
Rich: [laughing - he acutally had to turn away for a second] Mastodon and Rob Zombie with his band.
