Enter Shikari
Ottobar
First of all, I just have to say that it's been quite a while since I've seen a new band on purpose. I've read quite a bit about London's Enter Shikari and they're definitely being treated (in the UK at least) as the Next Big Thing. ES lives up to the hype though - really amazing show. They looked a little shocked that the medium-sized Ottobar crowd was so crazy - stage diving and singing along and heckling for songs that they "haven't played in 3 years." Bawlmor kids are always up on the trends though, so it wasn't surprising to me. Enter Shikari describe themselves as Trance-Hardcore, which is pretty accurate. 'Hardcore techno' as a genre has never been as popular in the US as in Europe or the UK, so I guess it's not really surprising that it's one of the few musical styles that hasn't been incorporated into mainstream US music (Ref. nu metal). Thus, I don't know if ES will catch on in a big way here, but they've got enough hardcore punk style to carry them through the US scene of 'Nintendocore' bands. That said, it was a great show. Despite having only one album (not out in the US), they played for an hour and danced like crazy. I took some video, just for the fishing-reel dance (which reminded me of the old old days in fucking Ludlow and Dan Zerbe's patented lawnmower dance). They said they won't be back in the US until spring, but until then I will try to download their album from the foreign tubes of the internets and pray daily that they will go on tour with HORSE the band.
