The Alex Skolnick Trio
Jammin Java, Vienna VA

I debated on wearing my Testament 'The Ritual' t-shirt, but ultimately didn't because I didn't want to look like either an aging metaller or a pretentious fucking hipster (who, along with a few actual jazz fans, made up the bulk of the audience for this show). Alex Skolnick is of course former and most recent lead guitarist for mid-level thrash band Testament who now plays jazz with an upright-bassist and a drummer who looks remarkably like Gartdrumm. They have a number of original tunes but are best known for their jazz arrangements of classic metal tunes from the likes of Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Kiss. I have to admit that I'm not a jazz fan at all (I would rather listen to just about anything else actually) but I thought it was interesting. Outstanding musicianship is always appreciated. Fucking pretentious hipsters are not.
