Review: 3 and Brazil, The Pontiac Grille, 6/8/2005

June 8th, 2005
#16 (according to my show calendar with dragonflies on it)
3
Brazil
First on Mars
Shark the Shark (The Sharks?)
The Pontiac Grille
Philadelphia, PA

I just realized this was my first time back in Philadelphia since visiting the original...

Well, this time I got there early enough to whip eggs at the opening band. I have no idea what they were called. On the flyer I saw it said 'Shark the Shark' but on the marquee it said 'The Sharks'...whatever...[there was still discussion going on about the previous day's shark question] Anyway they had a drum machine and sound-wise ranged somewhere between As I Lay Dying and Nine Inch Nails. They were not very exciting to watch...
2.1768/5

Next up, more locals: First on Mars. I was really impressed with them and I thought they put on a great set. They reminded me of Senses Fail/NFG/Armor for Sleep. More interesting to watch than the first band...
3.776/5

Finally, for the 10th time: 3
Not much to add from the night before, except DUMBEK SOLO! Further proof that I am the best souvenier picker-outer ever (seriously, ask around).
The sound was too loud during the whole set and the stage was really small. I took a bunch more photos (probably coming to the official 3 site soon).

And for the 9th time (which is not as catchy as the 10th): Brazil
The sound was even louder during their set and everything just blended together so you couldn't tell what the hell was going on. Not their fault, but still...does it need to be that loud for 15 people? Now I think I have all their names straight. I also didn't mention yesterday but Jonathan is looking, uh, damn...you know, compared to the first few times I saw these guys and stuff, not that I would, like, notice (yeah right)...

Random observations:
-Scion Ara surpassed 12,000 miles on the way home (10,000 mile mark: on the way back from PA; 11,000 mile mark: on the way back from PA - both times to see Bear vs Shark) Perhaps this is some kind of sign...
-I think I have lost the last lingering shred of personal repect for the men of Coheed...talk about TMI
-I bought a really cute purse: Loop NYC Jenny Mini - it has a pink dragonfly on it (natch) and a cool braided wrist loop (which started coming apart about two hours after I bought it, but still...). I need the guitar one though...
-Cooch is a cat-man...I actually know several cat-men (one of whom is a big Army dude) so stand proud, cat-men!
